Two Reports from India on opposition to Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant
[I] Koodankulam Rally and Awareness Conference
January 25, 2003

The People's Movement Against Nuclear Power (PMANP) organized a massive rally and an awareness conference on January 25, 2003 at Koodankulam. The rally of some 7,000 men and women from Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts started from the Bypass Road junction at 2:00 PM and proceeded to the conference venue. It was inaugurated by the Kanyakumari District Panchayat Chairman Mr. Mano Thangaraj in the presence of the Idinthakarai parish Priest, Rev. Venancius and others. The PMANP Convener Mr. Y. David and other leaders led the rally that crisscrossed Koodankulam and passed in front of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project main entrance. The participants that included fishermen, peasants, womenăs groups, students and people from other walks of life demanded the immediate abolition of the project and were encouraged by the Koodankulam residents all along the way.
When the rally reached the conference venue around 4:00 PM, the awareness conference began with Tamil invocation and the welcome address of Mr. Dhanaraj of Radhapuram. Mr. Y. David presided over the meeting. Dr. Sathyanesan, Dr. Lal Mohan, Dr. Sumitra Raghuvaran, Mr. Mano Thangaraj, Dr. R. Ramesh, Rev. Veni Elankumaran, Mr. Anbu Selvam, Mr. S. V. Anthny, Ms. Marial, Mr. Maria James and a few others spoke at the meeting. There were several short skits, songs, dances and musical instrument performances between the thought-proving speeches. At the end of the meeting, Dr. S.P. Udayakumar read the following resolutions that the conference passed through thunderous voice vote and applause. With the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Udayakumar and the national anthem, the awareness conference came to an end.
Be it resolved
 That this conference condemns the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project that has not shared the Environmental Impact Assessment, the Site Evaluation Study, and the Safety Analysis Report with the people of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts, the peoples representatives and journalists, that has not conducted any Public Hearing, that has not obtained any formal permission from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, and that has imposed itself on the people in a dictatorial manner.
 That the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project that endangers the safety and security of the people of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts, their health and happy life, their children's welfare, and the future generationsă wellbeing be stopped immediately.
 That the false and misleading claim that 10,000 people would be given jobs at the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project be stopped and that other projects that could employ local people be started.
 That all the waters that fall into the sea from various rivers be brought to the towns and villages of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts for their prosperity.
 That until the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project that jeopardizes the welfare of the people of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts, and endangers their environment is abrogated, the people of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts would struggle against it nonviolently and with determination.

Kanyakumari District Unit
Rally and Public Meeting at Nagercoil
January 30, 2003
As part of "Save the Nation, Make the Nation" campaign that started from Palghat on January 26, 2003, the Kanyakumari District Unit of National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM) organized a massive rally and public meeting at Nagercoil on January 30, 2003. The campaigners headed by Ms. Medha Patkar arrived at Nagercoil from Thiruvananthapuram in the morning and a Press Meet was conducted at the ROA Building near the District Administrator's Office. The Kanyakumari District Unit of the National Alliance of People's Movements held a special meeting of the unit with Ms. Medha Patkar and other campaigners.
At 2:00 PM a massive rally of several thousand men and women was commenced in front of the Anna Stadium. Ms. Y. Selvi, the Convener of the Kanyakumari District Unit of NAPM presided over the function and Ms. Lidwin of Tamil Nadu Women's Collective flagged of the rally.
When the rally reached the Veppamoodu Junction, a public meeting was held at around 4:00 PM. Advocate Maria James welcomed the audience and Dr. S. P. Udayakumar, the Secretary of the Kanyakumari District Unit of NAPM, delivered the presidential address. Rev. Maria Soosai of Joint Action Committee for Colachel Fishing Harbor, Mr. Soosai Nayagam of Deep Sea Fishing Workers Union, Sr. Elsi of Navajothi, Ms. Michael Amma of Tr-Sea Fishworkers Union, Dr. Gabriella Dietrich of NAPM, Ms. Kavitha of Nesam Pengal Iyakkam (Nesam Womenăs Group), Mr. Mano Thangaraj, Kanyakumari District Panchayat Chairman, Fr. Thomas Kocheri and others spoke at the meeting. At the end, Ms. Medha Patkar gave a rousing speech against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project and called for a collective struggle to build a new India. Dr. S.P. Udayakumar translated the thought-provoking and thunderous speech into Tamil. Mr. John Leonard of Coastal People's Development Movement proposed vote of thanks.
